Irazú and Poás Volcanoes

Irazu

Both located extremely close to the capital, Irazu and Poas are a great place to start your Costa Rican adventure.

Your guided tour of Irazu starts in the incredibly serene Orosi valley. After a traditional Costa Rican breakfast included in the tour, you will enter the Irazu volcano park. The center valley is rich in history and you will have the chance to see some of the oldest ruins in the country. At 11,300 feet, Irazu is the country’s highest volcano, and it’s views never disappoint. After your morning at the volcano you will be taken on a guided boat tour down the Sarapiqui river.

Tropical birds, crocodiles, and monkeys highlight the flora and fauna you are likely to encounter on the banks of the Sarapiqui. After a delicious lunch, you will cap off your day with more wildlife, this time in the form of a butterfly garden and a reptile house followed by some of Costa Rica’s finest, famous coffee before a short drive back to Aldea. Your tour of Poas, another volcano located just north of the city, starts at the Doka Estate coffee plantation.

Poas volcano

Enjoy seeing the inner workings of coffee production and sample the country’s finest! After Doka, you will have a chance to soak in the views atop Poas. Although it is 2000 feet shorter than Irazu, it boasts one of the largest craters in the world. Your day long tour ends at the beautiful La Paz Waterfall gardens, where you can take a chilly swim or admire the wildlife. After an 8 hour day you are taken back to San Jose.
